Most of us treat bedroom temperature as background noise — something to notice only once it's uncomfortable enough to keep us awake. Sleep research treats it differently: as one of the few environmental levers we can actually control, with a measurable effect on how well, and how long, we sleep.
Why your body needs a cooler room to fall asleep
As bedtime approaches, your core body temperature drops by roughly half a degree to a full degree Celsius. This dip is part of what signals to your brain that it's time to sleep — it runs on the same circadian rhythm that governs melatonin release. A room that's too warm works against this natural cool-down, delaying sleep onset and pulling you out of the deep, restorative stages of sleep through the night.
According to the Sleep Foundation, most adults sleep best when the room sits between roughly 18°C and 20°C (65°F to 68°F). Above 24°C, sleep quality tends to drop sharply — less deep sleep, more fragmented REM, more waking through the night.
Why this is harder to manage in India
For much of the country, for much of the year, 18–20°C isn't a realistic thermostat setting — it's either unaffordable to maintain all night or simply unavailable without air conditioning. And temperature is only half the problem. Humidity changes how heat feels on skin by slowing evaporative cooling, which is the body's main way of shedding heat while you sleep. A study of dormitories in Kanpur found that self-reported sleep quality tracked closely with humidity and ventilation, not just the number on the thermostat — a pattern that will feel familiar to anyone who has slept through a muggy Mumbai or Chennai night with the AC set to a perfectly reasonable 24°C and still woken up sticky.
Research on high-temperature weather and sleep, published via the National Library of Medicine, backs this up: heat and humidity together disrupt sleep more than either does alone, largely because trapped moisture prevents the skin from cooling efficiently.
Where your bedsheets fit in
You can't out-thermostat a humid climate, but you can reduce how much heat and moisture your bedding traps against your skin. This is where fabric and weave start to matter as much as room temperature.
- Fibre: 100% cotton is naturally more breathable and absorbent than synthetic blends, which trap heat and moisture close to the body instead of letting it evaporate.
- Weave: A crisp percale weave is woven in a simple over-under pattern that leaves more airflow between threads, which is why it tends to sleep cooler and feel drier through the night. A sateen weave, with its denser thread float, feels softer and slightly warmer against the skin — a better match for cooler months or air-conditioned rooms than for a humid August night.
- Colour and layering: Lighter colours reflect rather than absorb heat, and a single flat sheet under a light quilt gives you more control than a heavy duvet you'll kick off at 2am anyway.
None of this replaces a fan or an air conditioner. But on the nights when the room won't cool down as much as you'd like, the sheets you're lying on can either work with your body's temperature drop or quietly fight it.
A few adjustments worth making
Small, unhurried changes tend to compound. Switching to breathable, well-woven cotton bedding for the warmer months is one of them — it costs nothing to maintain and needs no thermostat setting. Running a fan even in an air-conditioned room helps even out humidity pockets that settle near the mattress. And going a shade lighter and a weave crisper in summer, then switching to sateen as the weather cools, mirrors the seasonal layering most of us already do with clothing — just applied to the bed instead of the wardrobe.
